This map tries to show where Italians lived or worked in Scotland during the 1930s. It was created to accompany the free exhibition Family Portrait: The Scots Italians 1890 – 1940 at National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh, 3 December 2015 - 29 January 2016. You can search the alphabetical list of Italians (upper left) and click on the address to locate the map there. Alternatively, you can zoom in on the map, and at higher zoom levels, hover your cursor over the circles to view the same details of the Italians at each location.

During the late 19th and early 20th century, Scotland welcomed its biggest wave of Italian migrants. 20% of the UK’s total Italian population settled in Scotland. In search of better working conditions and a better life abroad, Scotland and its growing industrial centres like Glasgow, offered hope. Here are some of the stories of the Italian Scots and how they shaped their adopted new homeland.

Waves of Italian immigrants have been arriving in Scotland since the late 19th Century. Unification of the country in 1861, intense poverty and two World Wars have seen millions of Italians leave their native land. Tens of thousands of their descendants are now dotted across Scotland and have influenced almost every walk of Scottish life. The University of Edinburgh - through its Italo-Scottish Research Centre - hopes to create an archive for the first time for their stories.
